Get all of the information you need before having cataract surgery

If you’re thinking about getting cataract surgery for yourself or a loved one, then this information is for you

A cataract is globally one of the most frequent causes of vision worsening.
The frequency of cataracts increases with age: almost everyone over 65 will experience a clouding of the lens without noticing impaired vision. By the age of 75, half of the population will experience some kind of vision impairment.

The clouding of the lens is to a certain extent part of the normal process of ageing, because the composition of the lens proteins will change with age. Therefore cataracta senilis is the most common type of cataract (over 90%).

Further causes may be diabetes, congenital forms or eye injuries (traumatic cataract). Additionally, smoking, malnutrition, some medication taken over a longer period of time (such as cortisone), X-ray, infrared or UV rays or strong myopia may create a premature clouding of the lens.

A cataract is easy to diagnose during an eye checkup:

Your specialist will inquire about subjective symptoms such as vision worsening, glare, double vision, decreased contrast vision and the like.

An eye test will show the extent of vision worsening.
After dilating the pupils with eye drops your specialist can undertake a microscopic examination of the outer eye, the lens and the macula. A clouding of the lens can thus be determined.

In the event of a cataract diagnosis and an indication for surgery, a pre-op appointment is scheduled.

During the pre-op appointment, your eye will be thoroughly measured and examined. For this we use the most modern equipment to examine the cornea and anterior and posterior eye segment as well as to measure the eye (biometrics)

After assembling all findings, we can select the artificial lens best suited to your needs.

The cataract is removed by surgery. The clouded lens is extracted by suction and replaced by an artificial one. We offer different types of cataract surgery:

Standard Cataract Surgery:

The clouded lens is removed and replaced by an artificial one with one focal point. After the surgery you will need glasses in most cases.

Lifestyle Cataract Surgery:

The clouded lens is removed and replaced by an artificial one with multiple focal points. After surgery you generally won’t need glasses.

Laser Cataract Surgery:

The clouded lens is removed by laser. Then an artificial lens with multiple focal points is also implanted, so that you won’t need glasses.

The surgery is completely painless and will take place according to the highest standards in our own operating theatre with local anaesthesia.

Is my cataract ready to be removed?

A cataract does not need to be ‘ripe’ for removal. Cataract surgery can be an appropriate treatment when the symptoms are sufficiently troublesome for you, and when you are willing to consider ways to improve your vision.

Will I have to wear glasses after my cataract is removed?

Not necessarily. This depends on the type of lens implant you choose to receive.

With a monofocal lens, you will need glasses for reading.

With a multifocal lens implant you will have a greater degree of freedom from glasses, including a greater ability to read without glasses.

I’ve always been near-sighted/short-sighted and able to read without glasses. Will this still be the case after my cataract surgery?

Not if you have a monofocal lens implanted to give you distance vision. A monofocal lens cannot focus the vision at different points in front of your eyes, so you will need to wear glasses after the surgery.

However, a multifocal lens can provide distance and near vision without the need for glasses, and so maintains the advantage of near-sight/short-sight while also providing good distance vision at the same time.

I’ve had laser vision correction in the past. Does this cause any difficulties when I have my cataract treated, and how can these be addressed?

No. We perform the surgery in the same way.

However, the preoperative calculations to select the correct strength of the lens implant are less accurate in eyes that have undergone prior vision correction surgery. This means that patients are significantly more likely to have a spectacle prescription after surgery and need to use glasses most or all of the time.
